Intumescent Coatings for Structural Steel

We provide intumescent coating services tailored to the stage and condition of the steel, ensuring fire protection is applied efficiently without compromising quality or compliance.

Surface Preparation Methods for Structural Steel

Different substrate conditions require different preparation techniques. We assess corrosion levels, existing coatings and site constraints to specify the most appropriate method for compliance and long-term performance.

From Site Survey to Final Certification

Every project follows a structured process designed to deliver accurate fire protection and full regulatory compliance. We measure, specify, prepare, apply and verify at each stage.

Initial survey

We measure steel sections, assess substrate condition and determine fire-rating requirements. Environmental factors and existing coatings are evaluated to inform specification.

Surface preparation

Substrate is prepared using the appropriate method—dry ice blasting, shot blasting, mechanical abrasion or cleaning—to ensure adhesion and coating integrity.

Intumescent application

Multi-coat systems are applied with continuous WFT monitoring. Environmental conditions are logged throughout to maintain performance standards.

Certification and handover

Final WFT verification, product traceability records and compliance documentation are issued. Your project is signed off and ready for building control approval.

From the founder

“After a decade in the protective coatings industry, I built FireCoatings to deliver compliant fire protection without unnecessary noise — just clear communication, a controlled application process, and professional site practice.”

why
Why Fire Protection
Steel loses strength fast
Structural steel weakens rapidly above 550°C, risking catastrophic failure without protection.
Intumescence expands under heat
Applied coatings expand when exposed to fire, creating an insulating char layer.
Compliance is non-negotiable
Approved Document B, BS 476 and EN 13381 mandate fire-rated protection on structural steel.

Quality
Quality Assurance & Certification
Every project is monitored and certified to ensure compliance with fire-rating standards and building control requirements.

Measurement
WFT Measurement
Continuous WFT monitoring during application ensures fire-rating compliance and system integrity.
Hand in black glove holding two temperature and humidity measuring devices showing 20.1°C and 18.5°C with 73.2% humidity.
Monitoring
Environmental Logging & Control
Temperature and humidity are recorded throughout application to maintain coating performance and adhesion.

Traceability
Full Product & Batch Traceability
Every product batch is recorded and linked to project documentation for regulatory audit and insurance purposes.
